04/05/07: The Morning After...

 This week was awesome! Here is a quick rundown.

My routine of late has been to walk down to Meltdown on my lunchbreak with two of my coworkers who are not comic book fans at all. This week we were walking back to the office with my big stack and some sandwiches and I was thumbing through 52 when I suddenly exclaimed "She put on the mask." Not only was this outburst a little embarassing for me, but highly unexpected. I have really been liking the Question/Montoya plotline but I didn't expect her to look quite so perfect in the costume. Her inner monoglogue even sounds like Vic Sage! My coworkers wanted an explanation, but I realized I had already fallen a few points down the geek ladder in their eyes so I didn't bother. I was a little upset about Batwoman, but I have been telling my husband for weeks how strange it was that there was all this fanfare about Batwoman and we still have no idea what makes her tick? It now seems like she was just brought in to be a foil for Renee. I need to think about the logistics of this, it has something to do with the true meaning of love(not just romantic love but true love Renee loved Charley in a waw she had not loved a lover in a long time), the identities you hide behind and the identity of your true self. But still with all the hooplah I think it would be a big waste for her to die. Ok now Firepits, and instruction manual, I need to reread all the verses from the book of crime, but I think they are definitely hinting that this book is an instruction manual for turning earth into Apokalips... come to think of it didn't we just have four horsemen... maybe I need to pay better attention. Oh and I don't know about you guys but I'm pretty jazzed to see what Atom Smasher is going to do to weasley Doctor Sivana.  I'm just going to go through this one in order. "why didn't they send Hal for me?""Truthefully? Because they wanted you to say yes." I totally agree if they sent Hal for me I probably wouldn't even open the door. Roy is too cute! And although I still want Dinah back wih Babs I loved her as the proud mother... weird since she is probably only 6 years older than Roy. The new costume is fun and I think we all knew who it was from. I hope he wears the hat though. Was it me or did anyone else think it was wierd he hugged Hal first... what an attention hog he is. The Vixen scene was cute and very true. I think a lot of people spend so much time thinking of how they aren't who they used to be that they don't notice how awesome they are now. Ok I am intrigued by Geo-Force, but I will need to do some quarter bin diving for his back story. Poor Red Tornado. Poor Mrs. Tornado. He was so eager to get back to work and drown out his memories of happiness Slideways? Howmuch you wanna bet this technology has some weird kinks. Hall of Justice was very nostalgic and a satelitle too? Just how much money does Bruce have? How does the gorvenment not notice what he's spending 8 billion dollars on? Yay Dinah! Keep those boys in line! A Museum? The JSA did it better. Will are you taking your pills? Starro! Well that explains the big heroclix event. Back away from the hawk Roy! What? What does that say? That third rate villain is actually Karate Kid! It's like opening a trading card every issue lately you never know which legionnaire you will get. The last big surpris? It's official the crossover is JSA, JLA and Legion of Super-Heroes. Time for the happy dance everyone! Happy Dance! Happy Dance!  Ok Wow... The fifties were weird. I haven't completed this one yet it is a huge tomb and I am sure I will be writing more about it. The lack of color is a little harder on this book as a lot of characters have similar looks and speach patterns. I have taken to memorizing collar shapes to identify the boys. It did bring into sharp contrast just how different Dream Girl looked from the rest of the girls and why they were so jealous. I love how Clark took his superhero trophy home to show Pa. Shows how he's just a regular boy, something we don't see much of with young superheroes lately. The Jumping around between Superman and Supergirls timeline was a bit jarring but definitely a cool concept. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to see what your heroes were like as kids? After a bit of reading I decided to get out my Classic Superman Cartoons to get me in the right mindset. Man the world has changed but you still gotta admire Lois's Moxie in a day when it was definitely not proper behavior for a woman.  Please make it stop! Somebody please taqke the crack away from Joe Kelly. This issue was so bad I am thinking of buying a shredder. Why? Why do that to such an amazing character. Supergirls is a mass murderer on the edge of insanity? I was hoping for a Darkseid plot at the least. You really thing teenage girls want to read a book about a crazed psycho murderer arguing with the memory of her dead father. My only hope is that the doppleganger showing up in issue 18 takes the place of this one and the consider head hunting for a new female writer.  Good but not as good as it could have been but not bad. I am still worried the ending will be rushed and threads will be left incomplete. Tony Bedard did great work on negation so I wont be too broken up if he has to tie off a few knots but I really want to know what Waid intended the resolutions to be. Now for my random thoughts. I am glad that Brainy isn't imagining Nura. It will give both characters more freedom if they are not inhabiting the same mind. I think having Dream Girl be a Girl from the dream world is an interiguing twist. Apparently she can move in dreams. She may have visited other dreamers but was just passed off as imagination. What exactly did Brainy do to her? What does Dream Boy's premonition of empty space mean? Is Earth going to make it? Nura is saying the whole universe is at stake. Saturn Girl is already on a first name basis with "Mon"? Exactly how much time has passed? When did Brainy become such a whiner? You have a 12th level intellect! You made a transmatter gate out of bubblegum and duct tape! Find the sprocking kryptonite and make the serum. What are they paying this kid for anyway? I keep forgetting how screwed up the normal people are in this future world... "The Legion as rebellion against cocoonism" is a cool concept but it gets lost if we only see it one panel every 8 issues. Who is "Telekinisis" is this an old character revamped? And man this one is whining worse than Brainiac. Please don't kill Timberwolf. Dating Jeckie is dangerous business. Gotta love Jo! What is Phantom Girl after? any guesses? Torture scene drags on but I think it was necessary to make us doubt what we already suspected. Lournu isn't that weak and has probably proven the best at deception out of the whole group. Where's Mekt? Matchups at the rendevous are fun. Can anyone give a rundown of who they think everyone is? I love how Brainy is still shooting evil stares at the other Coluan. Is Lyle's arm a symbiot? Does it have super strength? Does it have a mind of it's own? Does he have a better or worse chance with Supergirl now? Wow! For the first time this series Cosmic Boy is cool.  Wha! Huh ! That was out of character. I need time to process this but so far it isn't Gail Simone's best work. There is a lot of potential here, but I just dont understand the characters motivations. Maybe I just need to wait till the big secret is revealed. I cant help but notice how much the pink bunny reminds me of the golden age Black Canary.  Ok Mr. Whedon that was pretty darn acceptable. Yes I was surprised to see the Kingpin. We both thought it was going to be Tony Stark. I think that was intentional. The scene between Karolina and Niko has been needed for a long time. Xavin is a very confusing character and the insights about not having issues with homosexuality but with being human in general made their relationship make a bit more sense. Whedon is great with the quickfire popculture references and he put them to work with chase who has been dower for too long (I miss Gert but I don't want to lose Chase too) I love how Xavin fails at using Mr. Fatastic's powers but succeeds at using Invisible Girl's and no the irony isn't lost on me. How cool was that old Lace save? I absolutely love how eager molly is to open the vault. "Ooh! Let me! Pick me!" I'm a little worried about who that old lady is and the big guy with wings and I'm not a bog Frank Castle fan, but at least we'll be entertained by Xander ... er Chase. |

I definitely have to admit that it hurt to lose Vic Sage. Have you picked up Dennis O'Neil's Helltown Novel that came out last year? I was a little blown away they would devote a whole book to a character about to bite it, but it also struck me that that unchanneled anger is the same anger we see in Montoya. I suppose it all depends on who they get to write her.
