Buddy Baker has been a valuable role model proving that you can be a loving father and a super hero at the same time. I would hate to see his life torn apart the way that Ralph Dibney's or even Red Tornado's have been. I am assuming that these last two issues will be more like epilogues though. Tying up loose ends and giving us hints of what is to come.

ACTION COMICS #848 $2.99
Well I suppose that filler stories are better than no stories at all. Well except for the fact that I am forking over money for issues that are not in the main storyline. Richard Donner's story was very interesting, but he is a busy man... too busy for his responsibilities to this book it seems. So to fill the time we are given one shots, two shots, flash forward issues and even a 3-D issue to placate us while we wait for the storyline to continue. Sigh. Why am I picking this issue up? Well I guess I'm too lazy to take it off my pull list only to put it back on again in a few months. I assume that is what Bob Wayne is counting on.

AMAZONS ATTACK #1 (OF 6) $2.99
Ah a book about female power written by a man... I haven't been picking up Wonder Woman lately so I don't know how Themyscira returned or why the Amazon's are attacking. This series is promising cameos by most of the DCU and may have a lasting impact. Issue three shows what appears to be Supergirl and Wonder Girl taking up arms on the side of the warrior women, so there must be a good reason for the attack.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #5 $2.99
Fun with Doctor Destiny! With Doctor Destiny mining the brains of Dream Girl and the rest of the Arkham inmates there should be a lot of fun moments. Maybe there will be some some appearances by dream versions of legion allies and enemies. In the preview on Newsarama Commissioner Gordon says that Darkseid was spotted inside Arkham. That could be Nura's dream, but I assume there are several in Arkham who had dealings with Darkseid. Sandman says he saw Batman "torn to shreds" in one of his prophetic dreams. I am sure there are plenty of people inside Arkham dreaming of Batman's demise. Destiny could take his pick. This issue will at the very least give us the reunion of Dream Girl and Star Boy and a deeper insight into Sandy Hawkin's character.

SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #29 $2.99
Only two issues left till the end of the Waid/Kitson era. It seems like a very short time to wrap up the war with the Dominators and resolve all of the dangling plot points lying about. From future solicitations it looks like Cosmic Boy is about to do something pretty controversial. It will be interesting to see how this alters the team dynamic. I'm hoping we get some more insight to the nature of what Dream Girl has become and what will happen to the Wanderers and Sun Boy's team (do they have a name?) after this struggle is over.

SILENT WAR #4 (OF 6) $2.99
I know I keep threatening to drop this book, and I still may after this issue seeing as I doubt we will be seeing anymore of Quicksilver in it after last issue, but that cover is so terrifying that I have to find out what happens (nice work John Watson). If I recall correctly in the Earth X plot line a yell from Black Bolt took out Galactus. Looks like we are mostly going to be reading about some weirdness between Maximus the Mad (It would be nice to have an Inhuman's plot line that isn't the result of Maximus the Mad's meddling), Medusa and Black Bolt. Interestingly enough when all this wraps up Atillan is the first stop in World War Hulk. Could that be what Pietro saw in the future?

What is up with Billy Batson? I thought he was sporting the long hair and white outfit and was stuck on the Rock of Eternity holding it together while the seven deadly sins slowly drive him mad. Here he was a powerful guardian of magic but otherwise back in his captain marvel guise and away from the Rock of Eternity. Maybe we will learn more with Mary Marvel's story in Countdown. I dropped Trials of Shazam halfway through. That might have had some answers as well. I was actually very surprised at the heroes who did not show up to this or any of the World War III issues. Shouldn't oracle have been organizing things on some level? Where was Mr. Miracle and Barda? Maybe we'll find out later. It had some amazing fight scenes and a bit of character development for Atom Smasher, but basically the whole issue was pretty much a fast paced fight scene designed to serve as a framework for World War III. I will miss the old Black Adam as a shades of gray bad guy and I am sure at some point someone will give him the magic word, but it will never be quite the same.

The real interesting points were were the frames here and in World War III where Booster kept popping up as he traveled through time. On the last 2 pages I was giddy to see Booster and Rip Hunter show up and recruit T.O. Morrow into their plans to save the universe through time travel. Yes, this weekend I rummaged through the quarter bins to retrieve Bob Wayne's old Time Masters series. I have to admit that the female lead should have thought more with her brain than her libido, but other than that it was a pretty decent read and with only 8 issues you can get it for $2 if you are lucky.

BIRDS OF PREY #105 $2.99
I am so not used to talking poorly about one of Gail Simone's books, but um wasn't this book supposed to be about the Birds of Prey? Oracle only has 6 frames the entire issue, the team is being run by Spy Smasher (a new female incarnation of a World War II hero from Fawcett Comics) and if you count Hawkgirl as a member of the team there are still 8 pages out of 22 that don't have a single Bird on them (13 if you don't count Hawkgirl). Now I love the Secret Six and would gladly fork over $2.99 for a separate issue, but I want my Birds of Prey please! It feels like with Dinah off the team, and the Wonder Woman gig coming up, Simone has lost all interest in Oracle and her team. Now as for reviewing Secret Six guest starring the Birds of Prey and friends... I loved the ferocity in the fight between Scandal and Hawkgirl. Kendra is really shaping up to be a major player lately and a fight like that is a major reason why. She's been building into an interesting character for a few years now and I cant wait to see what Meltzer does with her over in JLA. The newest member of the Secret Six sent me for a loop... didn't they learn about working with Gotham nutcases after their stint with the Mad Hatter? I think she could be an interesting wildcard. I just hope we can keep the camp down a bit. The group has a decent chemistry and I would hate to see that overshadowed. Next issue should be the big fight between Knockout and Barda and man am I looking forward to that. I just hope that this wasn't the only reason for having Barda on the team and that she sticks around for a few more issues. Barda's character has needed something like this for a long time. She reminds me of where Dinah's Character was at the start of the series.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #8 $2.99
Tee Hee! This one was a fan girl joy ride. The "capture the flag" was a brilliant character study illustrating both the strengths and weaknesses of each player. I think the next investment they may want to make however is a team shrink as each of the players has a lot of wonderful baggage that should lead to great stories in the months to come.

The chess game was clever. Mr. Terrific wasn't even playing the game but instead letting his 2 opponents fight each other. So Dinah was actually checkmating Hal... something that is hardly an achievement. I wonder if we will see this theme pop up later in this arc.

Batman's fight with Karate Kid seemed a little non-heroic to me. Does Batman really have that much pride? It also looked like he had an assist from Black Lightning in the end. Hence Val's Statement that he cheated.

Dinah and Kara (although she is still referred to in this issue as Karen still, which confused me a little) were both great as leaders. Powergirl can have a very commanding presence when she wants to. I mean lets face it, if a skimpy outfit and ample bosom were enough to keep you a main character even though your continuity has been ripped up, we would have seen a lot more of Phantom Lady in the last 20 years. No Powergirl’s iconography are in her pride and take no guff attitude. She was a poster woman for the equal rights movement. Dinah was also a very pro women's lib character in the 80's and I hope they don't hide her under Ollie's shadow again after her miniseries is over.

The main event of course is the revelation of the scattered team of Legionnaires. I already wrote on this here. I have since noticed that the chapter title at the end of this issue, in addition to being the key phrase blurted out by Starman, is also (Lightning Lad in Interlac).

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES IN THE 31ST CENTURY #1 $2.25
This issue was a wonderful book for the 4-9 set. The frames are broadly drawn with vibrant colors and the words are large and easy to read J. Torres and Chynna Clugston-Flores set up the great device of allowing each character to describe his or her first impressions of Superman. This is a great way to showcase unique voices of each of the characters featured. The Johnny DC line is really strong right now with a solid stable of starter books to introduce younger readers to the core stable of DC characters without all of the heavy themes of the main books. We had a wonderful experience about a year ago when we bought some JLU and Teen Titan's issues for our nephew and found him later scribbling amazing sketches in his notebook, not of Superman or Spiderman, but of Martian Manhunter and Orion.

MANHUNTER #30 $2.99
This issue wasn't spectacular, but with the roller coaster of being on again off again on again I can't really be too harsh on it. There were mild resolutions with a lot of issues still left unresolved. Enough for me to pick it up again when it comes back later this summer. The resolution of the case wasn't a big surprise but I don't think that was the point. I think the more interesting part of the case was allowing Kate to interact with more of the major players in the DCU and see how she responds. The part with Kate's little boy was adorable. I thought he could have tied in more to the resolution of the Cameron Chase plotline, but I have been only reading for about four issues now so this may have been dealt with already.

NIGHTWING ANNUAL #2 $3.99
Um ok didn't I read this one over on FanFiction.net? It seems awfully familiar. The one thing I wanted from this issue it didn't give me. We still don't know where anyone stands. I'm sure there will be another similar issue with Dick and Kory when 52 resolves. Both Starfire and Oracle deserve better than this. Is Barbara going to pine away for Nightwing with his ring around her neck while he's bed hopping all over the world? I did like that Barbara was pushing him back into the world. So much was taken from him during the Devin Grayson years that he needs to be toughened up. I was expecting more from Marv Wolfman but lately he's been giving us pretty bland storylines. I know he can do better and maybe he just needed to wait till 52 resolved.

There were several interesting moments. Robin's confession to Batgirl was taken from an old issue Batman Family. I have been trying to find it with no luck. If anyone reading this knows please tell me so I can have better luck finding it. I found the uncomfortable moment in the safe to be a bit... well uncomfortable and a little crass... to tell the truth. It was the part that reminded me most of bad slash fiction. The scene at Dick's dorm was very cute. I wonder if they realize how alike they are? Statuesque, red headed warrior women. The scene with Jason Bard was a nice touch. I am hoping he plays a big part in the upcoming All-Star Batgirl. The time line for the wedding announcement scene doesn't line up at all with what the wedding issue. Yes the nerd that I am went and dug it out of a 50 cent bin last weekend and the whole time from engagement to ceremony Dick never goes to Gotham. Batman is sick and he doesn't even pop over for a visit. But then Superboy may just have punched the universe. A lot of continuity has change since crisis so I am going to just go with it.

The letters at the end were very reminiscent of the letters Gail Simone and Devin Grayson featured in Bird's of Prey and Nightwing right after the War Games crossover. I just hope that one way or another we can get some definition for these two.

WORLD WAR III PART ONE A CALL TO ARMS $2.50
Now 52 was originally designed to do what all crossovers are designed to do and that is to get you to read books you would normally not bother with. Because of the amazing writing team 52 evolved into something more than a crossover and became it's own book. That left DC with the problem of how to promote the lesser read books and how to tie up all of the loose plot points the series was supposed to tie up. That left them with the need to create World War III. A $10 publicity trick to try and perk your interest in comics that are selling poorly while giving you little or none of the promised answers to questions left hanging after crisis. The whole series is framed by Martian Manhunter's inner struggles after mind melding with Black Adam.

The first issue introduces you to the villains of Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters in a very gross but bad ass fight scene involving Black Adam throwing an aircraft carrier and Father Time loosing face... literally. Next we are introduced to Nightwing who turns out to be Jason Todd. This sets up the premise of Jones's one year later arc . Next is a long part about Firestorm which I was hoping would convince me to buy Firestorm but really only lost me in explanations of a convoluted plot that I assume explains things that happened at the start of his one year later arc.

WORLD WAR III PART TWO THE VALIANT $2.50
This was the issue I had the highest hopes for as it was supposed to explain, according to Didio at Wizard World LA, what happened to Supergirl. Like so much this week it only left me more confused than before. We see 2 of her fall out of the sky and Martian Manhunter perceives "A darkness choking her heart. Shadowing her soul." Ok... but who was that other Supergirl? Where was her Legion ring? Shouldn't it be on her right hand? What are those weird ghostly shapes following her? And what is up with the red nail polish? Is that some retro 31st century fad? So confused.

We are given barely a tease of Cassandra Cain being propositioned by Deathstroke, but why on earth would the head of the League of Assassins want to gang up Slade? I’m still very much confused on this one as well. Donna Troy's Transformation to Wonder Woman was nice but not nearly as moving as Roy's transformation to Red Arrow in Justice League of America #8. I haven't been reading Wonder Woman but I assume Donna will be giving the title back, though if one Wonder Woman is good wouldn't two be better? I am sure the Aquaman story answered some of the questions from that series, but I haven't been picking it up and this didn't convince me I should.

WORLD WAR III PART THREE HELL IS FOR HEROES $2.50
Yeah I kind of called this one. Terra has been dead before, her death had been mentioned in one year later and we already saw the next Terra in Supergirl and poor young Frankenstein may as well have been wearing a red shirt. Amanda Waller was bad ass as always and I am definitely adding suicide Squad to my list when it comes out. The Manhunter piece was good but trying to fit it into the timeline made me dizzy. I really liked Jonn's journey to his old haunts. Is there a Martian Manhunter showcase?

WORLD WAR III PART FOUR UNITED WE STAND $2.50
Ok on the first page can we not do close up sots of just Powergirl's boobs? I mean she's the head of the JSA. The double page spread of heroes was great. It's not easy to make Plastic Man look tough. The bonding scene between him and Offspring was very touching. In fact I enjoyed all the little pre-battle bonding moments. Then after some fighting we get a scene of Checkmate and a scene of Crispus Allen contemplating his fate as the Spectre. I may want to look at some of that storyline as he was a great character in Gotham Central. We see the end of the battle from 52 #50 from another angle. Martian Manhunter declares himself a changed man and sports a look closer to his natural Martian form. Then we get one great teaser page of a room full of monitors that only serves to drive us to more questions.

So it wasn't a total waste of money, but it was not everything that I would have hoped for.

X-FACTOR #18 $2.99
A calm Quicksilver is much creepier than and angry one. In this issue Quicksilver was almost Zen... in a psycho creepy way of course.

I have to say I miss Quicksilver the conflicted hero though. The writing is excellent and I can appreciate it, but I mourn the limitless possibilities of the former antihero version. Layla gets more disturbing every day as well. I am now thinking she is some how a chaos demon...she sees the order of things and plays on it. I definitely don't believe she is what she says she is. The powerless villains were a nice touch, it's good to see that they aren't simply going to be forgotten as characters.

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #3	$2.99
Mark Waid is highly entertaining. I'm a little sad that Batman has so much patience with this Blue beetle when he had so little with Ted Kord. Maybe he is giving this kid more slack because of his age. I love the schizophrenic scenes between Jaime and his armor. La Dama's fearlessness in the face of danger reminds me very much of Lex Luthor. It would be fun to see the two of them together sometime either as partners or competitors. Of course Supergirl stole the show in this one. Perez Draws her so well and Waid writes her like she should be written...sweet but tough. I can't wait to see little Kara putting Lobo in his place next issue.

The Night Before...

Wow! How can a week get more chock full than this one? I am wondering what possessed DC to release all 4 issues of World War III at once. Just 52 and the 4 War books would have made a pretty decent week but on top of that we have the start of the long anticipated JSA/JLA/Legion crossover, the truth about why Oracle and Nightwing didn't get hitched, the Birds of Prey going head to head with the Secret Six ...er Five, what would have been the finale for Manhunter if it had not been picked up again, the government crossing swords with X-factor, Blue Beetle and Batman Take on the Fatal Five(? wait, you mean from 1000 years in the future fatal five?) and lastly the animated Legion of Super-heroes which I should probably save for a slow week but we'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Click the read more link or the image for the rest of my random thoughts.

52 WEEK #50 $2.50
Ok so how can you top an amazing week like last week? Apparently you start World War III. Why you might ask? Well it could be because Black Adam seemingly executed (or murdered depending on your point of view) an entire country to find the men responsible for the monsters who murdered his family and many of his subjects. Incidentally as I mentioned last week, the mastermind responsible for the creation of the four horsemen (of Apokolips?) has worked for Darkseid in the past. It could be because the worlds largest criminal organization has completed some prophecy and appears to have paved the way for Apokolips with fire pits appearing all over Gotham. It could be that the Justice Society of America and China's Great Ten are butting heads over an island full of mad scientists. Maybe it is all these things, but I think it is a pretty safe bet that some part of Apokolips will be rearing it's ugly head in one of this weeks books. I'll even exclude Birds of Prey from this bet which coincidentally will be featuring two ex-Female Furies this week.

BIRDS OF PREY #105 $2.99
I picked up a pretty sizable stack of Mr. Miracle form a five for a dollar sale last week including one where Booster Gold and Blue Beetle show up and fight a team of Amazo robots. One of the robots hurls Beetle towards a crowd of onlookers. Barda catches him in one hand and tosses him back into the action then turns to her husband to tell him what a "Nice tush" Beatle has. Now that is my kinda super heroine. Last issue Barda saved the day three times! She's perfect for the birds. She loves Scott Free completely but she's been missing direction in her life the same way Dinah's character was missing direction when she joined Oracle.

That aside I have to say that it feels like Gail is done with Birds here. She seems to be simply using the book, as Didio put it, to get "her Secret Six Jollies." Those are her new toys and it seems the birds are left by the woodshed with the Velveteen Rabbit for Mckeever to pick up, polish off and try desperately to make new.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #8 $2.99
It all leads up to this. Months of teases, mostly in the JSA but a bit here. Who are these Legionnaires? Who's future are they from? Are there more of them? How did they get here? The whole crossover seemed at first to be about Earth 2 and it may still be, but perhaps the Earth 2 of the future and not the present? At any rate we have seen Star Boy (Now going by Star Man which I like. It always disturbed me that he kept the "boy" with the full on Grizzly Adam's beard), Dream Girl, Karate Kid and a tease of Dawnstar. That's enough to make it a 3 way crossover, but I sure hope there are more.

I also hope we can find a way to keep both incarnations of the Legion. We have Supergirl and Powergirl being essentially the same person from alternate realities but yet being so different, couldn't both Legion's exist but be different? Kind of like having your cake and eating it too? They did it in poorly in the 90's with younger clones showing up and co-existing with the older Legionnaires and somehow that wasn't too confusing... Ok it was but this is different..

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES IN THE 31ST CENTURY #1 $2.25
Yes I know this will rot my brain and possibly give me cavities, but I want it anyway. I'm assuming I'll be feeling my age by the end of the issue and won't pick up the rest of the series, but it just might be okay. I am not a fan of Devin Grayson's writing, but the work she did on the X-Men Evolution comic was surprisingly good. I'm hoping this book is another nice little surprise. I don't think I have read any of J. Torres other work (mostly young reader's books and comics), but his blog is interesting. Besides Michael Cornacchia, the guy who does the voice for Bouncing Boy was a friend of mine in college. He's extremely funny and a very talented actor.

MANHUNTER #30 $2.99
This issue was originally supposed to be the series finally, but Manhunter has since been saved once again. The writing has been fairly good and the title character is complex and intriguing. They've been pulling all the stops lately to get ratings. Batman, Wonder Woman and even the late Blue Beatle made cover appearances. This issue should wrap up a bunch of dangling plot lines and pave the way for a nice jumping on point and new storylines when the series returns in July. I must also say it's nice to have a D.C. hero stationed in Los Angeles. Between this book and Marvel's Runaways and Loners, I am beginning to see how it must be for New Yorkers to read comics.

NIGHTWING ANNUAL #2 $3.99
Way to leave a plot point dangling! It certainly looks like Nightwing was not meant to survive the Crisis and had that happened they would not need to deal with whether or not Barbara Gordon would have accepted his marriage proposal. Regardless of whether they are meant to be or not (and I sure loved them together when they were together) I doubt that Oracle would have said yes back at the time when his life was such a mess. (Not to mention he was sleeping with his ex, Starfire, over in the Outsiders book) But I would like to see what has happened and why they haven't talked in such a while.

Lately it has felt like Wolfman is phoning these in. I am hoping that once the restrictions on the secrets of 52 and World War III are lifted he will really be able to get creative. It would be nice to see strong confident smiling Dick Grayson again and not the sad, awkward one of late. There is a big difference between angsty and mopey.

<img src="http://www.diversionarium.com/covers/wwiii1.jpg" title="Is that Robin, Robin, Robin or Robin? The cover also shows an anguished Black Adam and a man holding a Nightwing costume and looking at an old Robin costume. At first I thought this was Dick Grayson, but we know he's in his Nightwing costume after the One Year Later. Then I thought it was Jason Todd... but he also was in the Nightwing costume after One Year Later. Then I realized that nobody said this was even our Jason Todd or Dick Grayson? Sandman mentioned what sounded like Earth Two Huntress was in one of his prophetic dreams over in JSA. Could this be Earth Two Dick Grayson?

WORLD WAR III PART TWO THE VALIANT $2.50
This issue is all about the young female partners of the big three. Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), Wonder Girl (Donna Troy though t Wonder Girl any longer) and Supergirl. So I am assuming from this and from the preview images that we learn how Cassie ended up with Deathstroke, how Donna ended up becoming Wonder Woman and how Kara ended up with the Legion of Super-Heroes. I am so hoping that the Supergirl with the Legion is a different person from the disaster over in the Supergirl main book. I can't think of how they could be reconciled otherwise.

<img src="http://www.diversionarium.com/covers/wwiii3.jpg" title="Stop killing the Titans! With Donna Troy, Raven and Jericho just back from the dead I am not sure it has the impact it may have once had.

<img src="http://www.diversionarium.com/covers/wwiii4.jpg" title="Who's the hero? Wally and Barry are the first two to come to mind. I think Beetle is out of the question. Maybe they mean a hero comes out of retirement or takes on a new identity? The ancient evil I am assuming is Darkseid (see my 52 #50 speculation). As to the cover...wow what is up with Black Adam and Martian Manhunter. That looks painful. Who's side are the Great Ten on? Will they survive the issue and have they been duped by Darkseid?

X-FACTOR #18 $2.99
The writing on this has been strong and consist ant. I have really enjoyed it. Peter David (whose blog is rather political, including a George W. Bush countdown clock) manages to make interesting political statements without hitting you over the head and without sacrificing character or story.

Of course those who know me know I would buy anything with Quicksilver even though all of his appearances have been painful of late. He seems to play a big part in this issue according to the preview. I just hope this insanity spell is over soon. I mean a couple years ago he was wearing sweaters and judging high school art contests.

BRAVE AND THE BOLD #3	$2.99
Wow in all the hub bub I almost missed Brave and the Bold. Last issue was hysterical with Hal Jordan the ladies man trying to deflect Supergirl's constant unwanted attention by thinking to himself "Don't be Ollie." I cracked up. I also thought Waid's general portrayal of Supergirl here was great. She's smart, good natured and fun, not at all like Kelly's monstrosity over in her main book. I dropped the New Blue Beetle after the first few issues. It wasn't bad, I just wasn't into it. So it will be nice to see how his character has progressed.

Gail Simone... Do you have a sister?

<img src="http://www.diversionarium.com/covers/bop61.jpg" hspace="10" alt="Birds of Prey - Tough Choices"">
So the good news is that Gail Simone has been tapped for Wonder Woman. This is a wonderful thing for Gail's career and I am hoping she can actually move Wonder Woman more towards a character that a female audience can relate too. The bad news is that in order to fit Wonder Woman into her schedule Ms. Simone has to drop Birds of Prey. My first reaction was fear. One of the few books that actually got women and showed female friendships in a very real and relate-able manner was most likely going to get passed to a male writer. (I must note here that I absolutely loved Chuck Dixon's run, but Gail added another dimension to the dynamics) But after a little thought I began to realize that the real issue isn't about whether Gail is writing Birds or not, but why is there only one prominent female writer in comics today? Practically every con you go to there is talk of trying to tap into the female demographic. Heck Didio dedicated a whole D.C. Nation Column to getting women to read that awful Supergirl drivel. Why can't they find a woman to write female super hero books. We know the female fans are out there with blogs like Maid of Might, Occasional Superheroine and of course Diversionarium to name just a few. Somewhere their must be a comic book fan who can write and happens to be a girl. This isn't about who is the best writer or who deserves work, I obviously love the work of many male writers or I wouldn't be the huge comic fan I am, it's about writing books about female characters geared specifically towards a younger female audience. Manga has a huge percentage of female readership. They also have books geared around the experience of growing up female.

Oh course no offense is intended towards Mr. Sean McKeever who will be taking over the book. I really enjoyed his Mystique Mini series and if we had to have a male writing he is an excellent choice.

I am sorry if I am wrong about this but this acid trip has Morrison all over it. I stood staring at what may be the coolest cover ever for probably a full five minutes embracing my inner nerd. And I do have to say that as if the plaid and polka dots weren't enough, the pipe completely made the outfit. I was so sad when they took away poor Will Magnus's pills, but man what a ride. I hope they launch a new Metal Men series and I hope someone with Morrison's twisted sense of humor writes it. Hey if they bring silver age Brainiac 5 in to this JLA/JSA/Legion crossover maybe he and Will Magnus and Mento from the Doom Patrol can form a sanity challenged scientists' support group.

I was a little freaked out that Chang Tzu is actually an egg... was that a yolk? I kinda thought he just looked like an egg... Continuing to add to last week's list of Darkseid hints, it is important to note that Chang Tzu has worked for Apokolips in the past. I have to ask Alan Scott though... If Chang Tzu is a member of the Great Ten... Shouldn't they be renamed the Great Eleven? The entire walk back from the shop (yes I couldn't wait to crack 52 until we got back... yes I know I should seek professional help) I was thinking that I must never have bothered to count them and had thus missed another big clue, but wikipedia lists ten members. Of course there have been several times when the Fantastic Four had Five or more members, so maybe it's more of a concept than a rule.

I love the Omnibot! I so want to see what T.O. Morrow is gonna do with it! And what did Sivana intend on using it for? My dad had both the Omnibot MKII and the Omnibot 2000 released in the 1980s. I think that the the Omnibot 2000 is still in my parent's attic somewhere.

ALL STAR SUPERMAN #7 $2.99

This is only the second multi part issue in this series and I have to say that with the long wait between issues I kind of prefer the one shots. However, this issue was still superb. Morrison is using a lot of the characters and relationships he has built up in the last 6 issues and allowing the previous issues plotlines to enrich the current story.

Jimmy Olsen is probably my favorite character in this series so far. He has all the smooth moves, hacking a blimp he intended to use to carry off his Christmas date, but instead using it to save the entire Daily planet senior staff, using only his watch to shut down the elevators in a bizzaro attack, making a direct call to the head of P.R.O.J.E.C.T. to get the 411 on the bizarros and actually getting through! To top it all off he's the one who comes up with the big plan to save the world. The boy is smooth. Too bad he apparently has to die ;-).

Did anyone else think Steve Lombard bore a striking resemblance to Stacy Keach another "man's man" with a drug problem... albeit of a different kind.

The scene with Lois is the snow was beautifully drawn and very touching. Frank Quitely's art is very good at capturing emotions. I was a little afraid Lois was going to get pneumonia with her dress flying all about, but that little kiss on the forehead before Superman takes off was just beautiful. I got a little emotional, but then I am a girl.

LONERS #1 (OF 6) $2.99

Very strong start. I was a little put off by the sheer amount of exposition and would have preferred either assuming the readers had read the Runaways arc (which I know is risky) or just allowing the characters to reveal themselves over time, but if it had to be done I think that the AA styles recovering teen super heroes support group worked pretty well.

I was a bit thrown by the fact that I work in a building on sunset that resembles the one Julie Power launches herself from and that Church may be one of the ones I pass on my way home. I am used to seeing places I visit all the time in magazines and on TV but somehow it is just spookier in comics.

The group has a lot of potential, most of the relationships seem to have stayed in tact. Ricochet is obviously still smitten with Julie. Mickey is still playing mom. I loved the addition of Mattie Franklin as the "Bad Girl." the team needs someone with a little edge since they no longer have the Runaways to play off of.

The issue itself aside from my groaning at the strategically placed exhibition (even the characters were protesting) was pretty strong. It established not only the main villain of the series, but most of the major character flaws and motivations of the characters. Mattie wants revenge, Darkhawk can't control himself, Ricochet wants Julie, Julie Power wants to have fun, Phil Urich has issues with assertiveness and self esteem and Mickey wants protect people from themselves especially after what happened with her fellow New Warriors. Add to this the fact that more than half the team maybe all are secretly using there powers and trying to hide it from the rest of the group and you end up with some good old fashioned juicy drama.

NEW X-MEN #37 $2.99

This hasn't really been my thing of late. In fact I have been trying to stay away from the core marvel universe as a whole for a while. My husband loves this title because he says it reminds him of the old Claremont days. This issue in fact was quite good. It was a mood issue designed to not only inform you of years of X-Men back story, but also to transition the reader from one style of story to another. It was incredibly well done. The whole issue was designed around a groups of younger students telling ghost stories around the fireplace... except one of them is not telling a story but a premonition. Pretty spooky. Throughout the book the students start to believe more and more in what is being told until finally the story catches up with them and and a demon army busts through the wall. It was a perfect set up reminding me of those creepiest of ghost stories that always ended with "...and he is standing right behind you!" I still can't deal with most of marvel's core continuity right now, but this particular issue was very well written.

NEWUNIVERSAL #5 $2.99

This issue is going to take me a while to process. There is a lot of information coming from the future, spirit guides and government agents. It's the kind of book that's like ice cream in that if you read it too fast it gives you a headache, but if you take your time it is very very rich.

Emmett Proudhawk's vision quest was beautifully drawn and very informative, but it was a little dull until you find out that he is actually a special operative for the C.I.A. I was totally caught off guard on that one, and it makes him suddenly much more relevant with all of the military action being set up against the newly emerged heroes.

In the same vein I absolutely loved the moment where Starbrand from the future, after a long and cliched speech to his younger self, realizes he's in the wrong past and just gives a simple "Oops." and transits out.

I still feel there is a lot going on here I need to process. I haven't had much experience with the New Universe outside of this series and Exiles so I may be missing stuff.

Unfortunately due to Earthlink letting me down in a big way. (It is a long story that spans the globe and involves the wasting of many hours) I will not be able to write a full "The Night Before..." this week. I am writing this on my work computer and trying to get it out before anyone catches me slacking off ;-) They are sending a technician to my house tomorrow (nearly a week later) to check the wires and see if they can figure out the conundrum. The best I can do is post my list for this week and a few quick notes. Surprisingly considering my general dislike for Marvel lately it is a big week for the "House of Ideas."FEB070241	52 WEEK #49	$2.50 <--- Only one week till 52 #50 and WWIII This should be a big one!

52Issue #48 - Renee Montoya put on the MAsk!!!!
52 WEEK #48	$2.50
My routine of late has been to walk down to Meltdown on my lunchbreak with two of my coworkers who are not comic book fans at all. This week we were walking back to the office with my big stack and some sandwiches and I was thumbing through 52 when I suddenly exclaimed "She put on the mask." Not only was this outburst a little embarassing for me, but highly unexpected. I have really been liking the Question/Montoya plotline but I didn't expect her to look quite so perfect in the costume. Her inner monoglogue even sounds like Vic Sage! My coworkers wanted an explanation, but I realized I had already fallen a few points down the geek ladder in their eyes so I didn't bother. I was a little upset about Batwoman, but I have been telling my husband for weeks how strange it was that there was all this fanfare about Batwoman and we still have no idea what makes her tick? It now seems like she was just brought in to be a foil for Renee. I need to think about the logistics of this, it has something to do with the true meaning of love(not just romantic love but true love Renee loved Charley in a waw she had not loved a lover in a long time), the identities you hide behind and the identity of your true self. But still with all the hooplah I think it would be a big waste for her to die. Ok now Firepits, and instruction manual, I need to reread all the verses from the book of crime, but I think they are definitely hinting that this book is an instruction manual for turning earth into Apokalips... come to think of it didn't we just have four horsemen... maybe I need to pay better attention. Oh and I don't know about you guys but I'm pretty jazzed to see what Atom Smasher is going to do to weasley Doctor Sivana.

Justice League of America #7 - How much money does one of those cost?
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #7	$3.50
I'm just going to go through this one in order. "why didn't they send Hal for
me?""Truthefully? Because they wanted you to say yes." I totally agree if they sent Hal for me I probably wouldn't even open the door. Roy is too cute! And although I still want Dinah back wih Babs I loved her as the proud mother... weird since she is probably only 6 years older than Roy. The new costume is fun and I think we all knew who it was from. I hope he wears the hat though. Was it me or did anyone else think it was wierd he hugged Hal first... what an attention hog he is. The Vixen scene was cute and very true. I think a lot of people spend so much time thinking of how they aren't who they used to be that they don't notice how awesome they are now. Ok I am intrigued by Geo-Force, but I will need to do some quarter bin diving for his back story. Poor Red Tornado. Poor Mrs. Tornado. He was so eager to get back to work and drown out his memories of happiness Slideways? Howmuch you wanna bet this technology has some weird kinks. Hall of Justice was very nostalgic and a satelitle too? Just how much money does Bruce have? How does the gorvenment not notice what he's spending 8 billion dollars on? Yay Dinah! Keep those boys in line! A Museum? The JSA did it better. Will are you taking your pills? Starro! Well that explains the big heroclix event. Back away from the hawk Roy! What? What does that say? That third rate villain is actually Karate Kid! It's like opening a trading card every issue lately you never know which legionnaire you will get. The last big surpris? It's official the crossover is JSA, JLA and Legion of Super-Heroes. Time for the happy dance everyone! Happy Dance! Happy Dance!

Showcase Presents the Legion of Super-Heroes
SHOWCASE PRESENTS LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES VOL 1	$16.99
Ok Wow... The fifties were weird. I haven't completed this one yet it is a huge tomb and I am sure I will be writing more about it. The lack of color is a little harder on this book as a lot of characters have similar looks and speach patterns. I have taken to memorizing collar shapes to identify the boys. It did bring into sharp contrast just how different Dream Girl looked from the rest of the girls and why they were so jealous. I love how Clark took his superhero trophy home to show Pa. Shows how he's just a regular boy, something we don't see much of with young superheroes lately. The Jumping around between Superman and Supergirls timeline was a bit jarring but definitely a cool concept. Wouldn't it be cool to be able to see what your heroes were like as kids? After a bit of reading I decided to get out my Classic Superman Cartoons to get me in the right mindset. Man the world has changed but you still gotta admire Lois's Moxie in a day when it was definitely not proper behavior for a woman.

Supergirl <br />
#16 - Please make it stop!
SUPERGIRL #16	$2.99
Please make it stop! Somebody please taqke the crack away from Joe Kelly. This issue was so bad I am thinking of buying a shredder. Why? Why do that to such an amazing character. Supergirls is a mass murderer on the edge of insanity? I was hoping for a Darkseid plot at the least. You really thing teenage girls want to read a book about a crazed psycho murderer arguing with the memory of her dead father. My only hope is that the doppleganger showing up in issue 18 takes the place of this one and the consider head hunting for a new female writer.

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #28 - Stop whining you have a 12th level intellect! Figure it out!
SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #28	$2.99
Good but not as good as it could have been but not bad. I am still worried the ending will be rushed and threads will be left incomplete. Tony Bedard did great work on negation so I wont be too broken up if he has to tie off a few knots but I really want to know what Waid intended the resolutions to be. Now for my random thoughts. I am glad that Brainy isn't imagining Nura. It will give both characters more freedom if they are not inhabiting the same mind. I think having Dream Girl be a Girl from the dream world is an interiguing twist. Apparently she can move in dreams. She may have visited other dreamers but was just passed off as imagination. What exactly did Brainy do to her? What does Dream Boy's premonition of empty space mean? Is Earth going to make it? Nura is saying the whole universe is at stake. Saturn Girl is already on a first name basis with "Mon"? Exactly how much time has passed? When did Brainy become such a whiner? You have a 12th level intellect! You made a transmatter gate out of bubblegum and duct tape! Find the sprocking kryptonite and make the serum. What are they paying this kid for anyway? I keep forgetting how screwed up the normal people are in this future world... "The Legion as rebellion against cocoonism" is a cool concept but it gets lost if we only see it one panel every 8 issues. Who is "Telekinisis" is this an old character revamped? And man this one is whining worse than Brainiac. Please don't kill Timberwolf. Dating Jeckie is dangerous business. Gotta love Jo! What is Phantom Girl after? any guesses? Torture scene drags on but I think it was necessary to make us doubt what we already suspected. Lournu isn't that weak and has probably proven the best at deception out of the whole group. Where's Mekt? Matchups at the rendevous are fun. Can anyone give a rundown of who they think everyone is? I love how Brainy is still shooting evil stares at the other Coluan. Is Lyle's arm a symbiot? Does it have super strength? Does it have a mind of it's own? Does he have a better or worse chance with Supergirl now? Wow! For the first time this series Cosmic Boy is cool.

Welcome to Tranquility #5
WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY #5	$2.99
Wha! Huh ! That was out of character. I need time to process this but so far it isn't Gail Simone's best work. There is a lot of potential here, but I just dont understand the characters motivations. Maybe I just need to wait till the big secret is revealed. I cant help but notice how much the pink bunny reminds me of the golden age Black Canary.

Runaways #25 - Joss Whedon takes the helm
RUNAWAYS #25	$2.99
Ok Mr. Whedon that was pretty darn acceptable. Yes I was surprised to see the Kingpin. We both thought it was going to be Tony Stark. I think that was intentional. The scene between Karolina and Niko has been needed for a long time. Xavin is a very confusing character and the insights about not having issues with homosexuality but with being human in general made their relationship make a bit more sense. Whedon is great with the quickfire popculture references and he put them to work with chase who has been dower for too long (I miss Gert but I don't want to lose Chase too) I love how Xavin fails at using Mr. Fatastic's powers but succeeds at using Invisible Girl's and no the irony isn't lost on me. How cool was that old Lace save? I absolutely love how eager molly is to open the vault. "Ooh! Let me! Pick me!" I'm a little worried about who that old lady is and the big guy with wings and I'm not a bog Frank Castle fan, but at least we'll be entertained by Xander ... er Chase.

This week we have a double shot of Legion with both Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes and the First Legion Showcase. I am bringing a backpack for this one.

52Issue #48 - Renee Montoya as the New Question!
52 WEEK #48	$2.50
Now in it's final 5 issues 52 is still the comic I pull first off the pile (ok maybe not on JSA week's but can you blame me?) and it has built up so much steam I feel like I'm being pulled along by a bullet train! What an amazing ride. There is a lot to tell in a few issues (wow how weird is tha 5 issues would be half a year for a normal book) I am just hoping the pacing stays as strong as it has been. I am looking forward to countdown and the possibilities of an evil Jimmy Olsen (Yes people I am a little sick in the head but you know deep in your heart you've always suspected Jimmy had a dark side.) But I am definitely going to miss the phenomena that is 52.

Justice League of America #7 - Gearing up for The Lightening Saga
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #7	$3.50
I am anxiously the awaiting what the most recent issue of Wizard Magazine is touting as a JLA/JSA/Legion of Super-Heroes crossover but I don't think the real action is set to start till next month. I fell in love with poor John Smith and his heroic wife last month. My husband felt last issue was just plain cruel, but I found it poignant and touching. The Justice League is always hovering on the edge of being too big to relate to, but this story of friends and sacrifice was something that will stay with me for along time. That said the only reason I have been picking up the Justice League lately is to have a context for the long anticipated Justice Society crossover. JSA has raised the bar lately and amazingly is way outselling the JLA... would you have believed this a few years ago?

Showcase Presents the Legion of Super-Heroes
SHOWCASE PRESENTS LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES VOL 1	$16.99
Yay finally! I have been collecting some of the Marvel essentials for a while now and it was a big help in filling in all the events that occured prior to my own birth (and I am no youngster people) D.C.'s Showcase series is perhaps even more neccessary to keeping these older classics alive as the original issues to many of them are incredibly hard to get and the deluxe showcase editions are also cost prohibitive. Legion is not as extreme a case of this as some of the comics of the 40s, but I am hoping overdosing on 500 pages of corny late 50s and early 60s helps me better understand the issues I have managed to cram into my legionlongbox.

Supergirl #16
SUPERGIRL #16	$2.99
Why is this still on my list? Maybe I am a glutten for punishment? Last month was pretty dismal, it read like a pamplet on spousal abuse. I had such High hopes for our new Apokalyptian friend. I didn't care if turned psycho bad guy or evil spy yearning to redeem himself, but did they have to make powerboy so incredibly one dimensional. I suppose I am only picking up the issue for any teasers for World War Three and clues to the truth about Supergirl's duality. I'm just going to say this to Mr. Didio over at D.C. Comics, if you really want to have a book appeal to young female audiences, you may want someone to write it who has experience as a young female!

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #28
SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #28	$2.99
Well this is the first issue since the announcement that Waid and Kitson are off the book. I have to say that this is the series that hooked me into legion. I have since filled a longbox with backissues from Superboy on and have different feelings about different eras, but if it were not for waids excellent dialogue and quirky insights I never would have felt that I could break in to what I felt was a bit of a Legion clique. I found last issue dissapointing though as we skipped a large gap of time and I really wanted to see what had happened. I am hoping all will be revealed, but with Waids limited time on the book I am seriously doubting it. It was perhaps the biggest weakness of Waid's run that so many important scenes happened off panel. Oh well Mr. Waid and Mr. Kitson you made a Legion fan out of me and I am grateful.

Welcome to Tranquility #5
WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY #5	$2.99
This is still a very good book. I'm just not head over heels for it. It is well constructed deconstuction. The series is carefluy crafting a very intriguing murder mystery while breaking apart traditional super hero archetypes. I apreciate it and I always enjoy Gail Simone's writing, but it just isn't the book I am rushing to the comic shop for.

I adore Firefly. I was there at comicon when Mr. Whedon shed tears onstage. The man is capable of amazing storytelling. He just didn't bring his A game to the last few issue of Astonishing X-men. The first few blew me away, but it looks like Marvel politics and a hectic schedule made the last few late and lackluster. I am hoping for more from runaways. We know Mr. Whedon can handle teen crimefighting groups and Runaways is 80% about the snappy dialogue, but will his current work schedule drain him of ideas? Oh and I really want Get back. I know there is a lot of character delevopement all around with her dead, but I still want her back.

Oracle, Barbara Gordon, Browsing Diversionarium during work hours
Not that I am encouraging this type of behavior or anything, but sometimes a person's brain gets fried and you need a break from slaving away. Now to those who work with me... you don't have to worry I'm blatant about my web time, but for those of you who aren't and need your daily comic book news fix, this might help you look more productive. But I must warn you Jimmy Olsen that Superman wouldn't approve! Remember back in the day when websites would have a red panic button to hide what you are doing behind a picture of an excel spreadsheet. Well http://www.workfriendly.net takes that one step further by actually restyling the content you are looking at as a Microsoft word document. It won't fppl the truly savy but might keep the casual glance from muttering under his/her breath about what a slacker you are. Taking it one step further if that casual glancer walks over to your desk you can mouse over the "Boss Key" to replace the content with some motivational jargon.
